In this Blog I will be discussing why being a stylist appeals to me and what I love about styling
I have a long list of jobs that I would like to do in the future. However, one that comes to mind a lot is being a stylist. I’ve always loved observing how us as individuals choose to style ourselves. I personally believe that the best outfits are made when we just put on whatever clothes we can find and leave the house.
I also love seeing how people put elements of themselves into their outfits without even knowing it. It’s a skill that everyone knows how to do without even knowing about it. We express ourselves and show our individuality every single day. Whether it’s the shoes you wear or the tie you’ve picked out.
I feel like there was a decline in the individuality for quite a while. Especially in 2021. It felt like everyone had to follow every single trend, which felt very dystopian. It was like we had a uniform that everyone had to follow. However, we are definitely seeing an an increase in individuality. People are wearing what they want to wear and, are putting pieces of themselves into their outfits. Which I love to observe. My love for observing outfits would definitely help me in becoming a stylist. This is because it helps me look for small details that you would usually miss.
Another reason, I would love to be a stylist is because I love playing around with different layers and patterns. I don’t like restricting myself with what goes with what. I love to put outfits together in my head and then just go with it and not overthink. I don’t think fashion should have any rules whether it’s with colours of clothing, materials or even jewellery. Theres not one specific set of instructions for every single person. As individuals we have to go with what we love because, that’s what works. When you’re a stylist you can do this everyday. Play around and experiment with things that shouldn’t work but, you make it work. And that’s what I love about styling.

If I had to pick a style inspiration it would definitely be Devon Lee Carlson. Devon is the co founder of Wildflower Cases, a phone case company brand that she shares with her sister Sydney. Wildflower cases is an extremely popular company, especially with gen Z. However, not a lot of people know about Devon. Devon is praised for her eclectic taste in vintage clothes and, her impeccable outfit choices. Whether formal or comfy, her outfits never fail to stun people. I love seeing how she styles herself and, how her style slightly changes but manages to keep her essence. While she isn’t officially titled as a stylist, she styles herself a lot for photoshoots and has her own clothing line with Marc Jacobs. Furthermore, she styled Olivia Rodrigo for her “Good 4 U” music video. Devon inspires people with her amazing styling whether you know her or not. A lot of trends we have seen out on the streets is thanks to Devon Lee Carlson.
Being a stylist means that you can experiment and play around with fashion on unique individuals. No two clients will be the same. Everyone is different. Picking out different clothes and accessories then, making it all come together is something that appeals to me a lot
Lastly, I love the idea of being given a brief for an editorial. Then coming up with ideas for what clothes and accessories would go with the editorial and the brief. I love this because it allows you to look for clothing in areas that you wouldn’t usually look.
