WHAT IS A COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER ?

In this Blog, I will be discussing what a Communications Manager is, their responsibilities and the skills needed to become one.

What is a Communications Manager ?

A Communications Manager is the person responsible for how a brand communicates their message and ethos. They oversee all forms of communication techniques and make sure that it represents the brand in the best way possible. When we look at advertising for a brand, whether its advertising, social media or articles, they would’ve been approved by the Communications Manager to make sure that they want us, as the consumer to view it. Furthermore, if a piece of communication or advertising goes wrong and causes a stir, then it’s the Communications Managers fault, and they will have to quickly come up with how to fix that problem. A good example of communication tactics going wrong is the Kendall Jenner Pepsi advert. This was an advert that had a severe backlash from the public, and is still remembered as a massive fail of advertising. This would’ve been overseen by the Communications Manager, who would’ve approved this advert.

Being a Communications Manager is a job title of its own. However, you can also have a job that involves the tasks of a Communications Manager in other job titles. For example, being a social media manager means that you are responsible for how the brand is perceived, but you communicate this through the form of social media. Whatever you are posting and promoting, will represent the brand.

What are the responsibilities of being a Communications Manager ?

  • Select and oversee communication tactics
  • Approve campaigns, advertising and events
  • Responsible for communication strategies that we see on a daily basis. This includes billboards, articles and web pages
  • Promote a company’s mission and messages
  • In charge of how a brand communicates themselves to the public
  • Approve and decide on Marketing strategies
  • Understand a brands ethos and make sure it is always being used

  • Design communication tactics

  • Approve other peoples work
  • Good writing skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Be innovative and come up with new and exciting ideas

  • Resourceful
  • Be a good problem solver
