A Creative Director is an extremely important role in the fashion industry. They are essentially the voice of the brand. They make all the final decisions in what goes out on the runway and how they want the brand to be perceived. They are the sole reason for the way we see brands and what we associate them to. A Creative Directors responsibilities include overseeing important projects for campaigns, Pitching briefs and presenting ideas and concepts to important figures in the fashion industry.

An example of a Creative Director currently in the Industry is Sean McGirr. McGirr was recently announced the Creative Director of Alexander McQueen in 2023. Sean, originally from Dublin, graduated from Central Saint Martins and immediately built up an impressive resume. He’s worked with brands like JW Anderson and Uniqlo before earning this new title of Creative Director. Considering McGirr is still new to this job, he has already made a great impression and has made the industry excited for what is to come next.

Another example is a surprising but impressing one. Pharrel Williams is the Creative Director of the French brand Louis Vuitton. While this may come as a shock to a lot of people, Williams is very experienced with working in the Fashion Industry. He previously had a streetwear brand in 2003 along with Japanese designer Nigo. This streetwear brand was called Billionaire Boys Club.

What skills do you need to be a creative director?

• Good personable skills – you need to be confident and outspoken to get your thoughts and decisions across to your team
• A good leader
• Knowledge of the Industry
• Good communication skills
• Resilience – it is not an easy job
• Be up to date with the fashion industry and world
• Be able to make decisions quickly- no indecisiveness
• Have clear and well thought out ideas
